Over the past 15 years Warrick
Sony has worked in the electronic media as a composer, producer, DJ and
sound designer on a multitude of films, documentaries, commercials, art events,
theatre, dance and project albums. He is the founder and sole member of the
Kalahari Surfers recording projects, known for their five albums of politically
radical musical song/satire which were released through the independent
London label Recommended Records during the mid 80's. During this time
he also toured Europe, as well as playing concerts in Eastern Bloc cities:
Berlin, Moscow, Riga and (then called) Leningrad. Collaborations over the years
include work with Sowetan poet Lesego Rampolokeng, including a series of
concerts in Brazil, music for artist
William Kentridge's multi-media
productions "Faustus in Africa" and "Ubu and the Truth Commision" and
with Brendan Jury under the name "Trans-Sky". A tour with British group
Massive Attack and a 1999 recording collaboration with ex-ORB members Greg
Hunter and Kris Wesson for MELT 2000 label have seen his producing and composing
skills take a fresh new turn. Warrick engineered the Brian Eno workshop sessions
at the Baxter theatre in Cape Town.
His work for television includes
various BBC and Channel 4 commissions as well as local TV themes for SABC such
as "Tube", "The Line", "Thetha Msawawa", "Focus" and others, and
a single from Tube with kwaito king Arthur, called Dubaceous. Other kwaito
collaborations include a film soundtrack (Jump The Gun) with Joe Nina for
Channel 4 director Les Blair, and an album with Ghetto Muffin.
Warrick's dance remixes for MELT2000 have been released on various compilations, and recent work for African Dope Records include the 2001 release Kalahari Surfers' album "Akasic Record", which spawned various licensed tracks for compilations and two European tours. Commercial work includes clients like Nissan, Daewoo, Landrover, Cape Velvet, Nationwide Airlines, BMW and many others. Warrick is currently working at Milestone studios composing and producing various projects, film music and commercials.
